Four new Kindles -- including the full-color Kindle Fire for $199

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has announced a new batch of Kindles -- including a new lower-priced option that's only $79, and a high-end, full-color option that could be a game-changer in all kinds of ways.

From Bezos' open letter on the Amazon site:
"We are excited to announce four new products: the all-new Kindle for only $79, two new touch Kindles – Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G – for $99 and $149, and a new class of Kindle – Kindle Fire – a beautiful full color Kindle for movies, TV shows, music, books, magazines, apps, games, web browsing and more, for only $199."

The Kindle Fire also boasts a "radical new web browser" called Amazon Silk. The product clearly intended to compete with the iPad and NOOK Color, but one would imagine it may also make some folks nervous over at Netflix. (The purchase of Kindle Fire comes with a free month of Amazon Prime, the company's streaming video service.)

It's also worth noting that the lower-priced Kindles come with advertising. If you want a Kindle with no ads, you'll have to pay about $30 more. (All the variations are available on the site -- it's easy to find the plan that works best for you.) Those who try to call this some kind of bait-and-switch seem to forget that we've lived with this business model all ours lives: Free television comes with ads. Premium television does not.
